The News Cover: Hundreds of farmers had assembled in the Tikonia area in Lakhimpur Kheri, Uttar Pradesh. Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Ajay Kumar Mishra, his son Ashish Mishra and Deputy Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Keshav Prasad Maurya were in a 3 car convoy. Protestors had gathered to block their convoy as they were upset over a recent speech by Mr. Mishra. Of the 3 SUVs that were blocked, 1 of them ran over 4 farmers instantly killing them. Enraged over the death of the farmers, the protestors hit the car with sticks, broke the window panes, and assaulted BJP workers. One of the SUVs managed to escape while the other two remained stuck in the mob. A car was even set on fire. 4 farmers, 3 BJP workers, and 1 car driver lost their lives in the violence. While UP Police did not give any information, the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) identified the four farmers and their ages.

Have a look. The protesting farmers have alleged that the car which killed the farmers was driven by the Union Minister's son Ashish. A murder case has been filed against Ashish and several others have been named in the FIR. SKM has said 12-15 farmers were injured as well. The state government announced that it will pay a compensation of ₹ 45 lakh and a government job to families of farmers killed in the violence. The injured will be given ₹ 10 lakh. A retired High Court judge will now investigate the violence. When the media asked Mishra about the FIR lodged against his son he said, I am not aware of any FIR against Ashish. "My son wasn't present at the spot. He was at the event. He could never run over the farmers. Had my son been there, he wouldn't have come out alive. I was with the deputy CM during the skirmish.”

Mobile internet services have been suspended in certain districts and section 144, which prohibits assembly of four or more people, has also been imposed. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav was not allowed to visit Lakhimpur Kheri by the police. Then Yadav decided to protest outside his house in Lucknow but the police have detained him. The News Cover: You all know that when the coronavirus spread healthcare workers worked hard to treat patients. Without caring for their security they selflessy treated patients. They are treated like Gods. They are the ones who are giving people vaccines so that we all can protect ourselves from the coronavirus. They have been called God by many. However a very shocking incident happened in a hospital located in Sherbrooke, Canada.

A man was shocked that the nurse had vaccinated his wife without his consent. He went to the nurse and began to shout. He got angry, and punched her in the face and ran away. The police are now looking out for this man and will find him soon. Even though doctors did so much for us throughout the pandemic, yet people abuse and beat them up. We all must respect doctors and all healthcare workers and not treat them badly as even they are under a lot of stress.

The News Cover: Pakistani terrorists infiltrate the Indian border and attacked the Uri army base in 2016, killing 19 Indian soldiers. The terrorists were mainly from Pakistani Punjab. On 18 September the Indian Army had received a tip-off that Pakistani terrorists were planning to cross the J&K border. For 10 days the army was planning and working to stop these terrorists as the terrorists used the same route which was used by the previous terrorists to attack Uri in J&K. A total of 7 terrorists who were trying to enter were killed in the last 1 week. Yesterday 6 terrorists again tried to enter the Indian border but the Indian army started firing at them.

4 terrorists got scared and turned back. Two of these terrorists managed to sneak into India. 1 of the terrorists was killed in the firing but one of them surrendered in front of the Indian Army. Turned out the boy was very young. He was 19 yrs old boy named Ali Baba Patra. Upon questioning, Patra's revelations shocked the Indian Army. A press conference was held in Uri, where Patra was made to talk to the reporters. The army wanted the world to know what the Pakistani terrorist had said. Patra said, "I am very poor and have many financial difficulties. My father died and I have a mother and sister. We had no money to eat. So the LeT told me to join them and they paid me Rs 20,000 to join.

I was trained in combat fighting using military equipment. The people who trained me were Pakistan Army officials. After my training, the LeT ordered me to go to ISI which is Pakistan's intelligence agency. The ISI instructed me to enter J&K to conduct terrorist activities and deliver arms. The ISI said that the Indian government is oppressing the Kashmiri people and I had to overthrow the Indian government. They said once I returned to Pakistan after completing the mission, I would be given Rs 30,000.” The Indian army said that this proves that the Pakistan Army is training such terrorists. The army said it's clear that Pakistan lures the poor and trains them to conduct attacks.

Sneha Dubey Strongly Responds to Imran Khan at UNGA

The News Cover: At the UNGA, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan spoke against the abrogation of article 370 in Jammu Kashmir. Khan said he wants to end the suffering in Kashmir and wants to solve the issue by holding talks with PM Modi and discuss the removal of article 370. Khan said he has continuously been ignored. Many officials attended the event and IFS officer Sneha Dubey represented India. She delivered a blistering response to Khan's address. Let me tell you what she said, "Of all the countries in the world, Pakistan has the highest number of terrorist organizations. Pakistan also supported Osama bin Laden who was responsible for the 9/11 aerial attacks on the twin tower. They also provided Osama a safe haven to hide for years.

The entire world is aware of their despicable behavior. They have always encouraged terrorists and allowed them to move about freely. Their statements about curbing terrorism are absolute nonsense. Union territories of Jammu & Kashmir & Ladakh "were, are, and will always be an integral and inalienable part of India. Currently, many areas in J&K have been illegally occupied by Pakistan. Pakistan needs to vacate these areas immediately. Her response went viral on social media and people started praising her. Many news channels wanted to interview Dubey but all she said was 'No comments'. She said, "I already said what I wanted."

However, Aaj Tak's celebrity news anchor Anjana Om Kashyap barged into Dubey's room where she was working without permission. Kashyap bombarded her with questions but Dubey asked her to leave. However, the anchor stayed put and requested an answer. Kashyap did not leave and kept asking questions which Dubey did not reply to. Since there was no answer, the humiliated anchor walked away. Have a look at the video. Did you see the video? The video was broadcasted live. The anchor barged into Dubey's room and bombared her with questions. When she did not receive an answer she should have walked away instead of being so stubborn. Many people are now making fun of her.

Are Zomato, Ola, and others REALLY helping the workers?

The News Cover:  Grofers is an Indian online grocery delivery service and is now believed to be a unicorn i.e a company valued at more than USD1 billion. On 25th August, one of its users tweeted in delight that his grocery order had been delivered within 13 minutes! That's right - in 13 minutes. Just image, someone put an order, the store received it, the goods were packaged, and the delivery boy reached the store and delivered the goods to the user, just within 13 minutes. Actually, the CEO of Grofers wasn't as happy. He replied that the delivery took 3 mins longer than he would have liked. He assured everyone that “We would work harder in the future". The reply was tweeted soon after some news reports stated that Grofers was planning to do deliveries in under 10 mins. Unsurprisingly, the CEO started receiving a lot of hate on social media. And Grofers isn’t the only company that’s using this strategy. Other companies have expressed that they want to reduce the delivery time too. Because in this race to cut delivery times, many people fear that the consequences would need to be faced by the delivery workers of these companies, who would have to risk on the road get these deliveries on time. This isn’t an imaginary situation.

Something of the short took place in real life. In Pune, when a delivery executive was asked why he was driving on the wrong side of the road, he said, “I am already late for the pick-up.” The pressure on the executives is due to an obvious reason – the more orders they deliver, the more money they make. Sumit Kumar, a Zomato delivery executive had to complete 12 orders in a day to earn an incentive of Rs 200. A delivery executive in an interview stated that this pressure to do faster deliveries is not exerted directly by the company. It’s indirect and he "observed that more orders are assigned to the ones who deliver it faster." This is the story of the 15 lakh drivers working for companies such as Ola, Uber, Zomato and Swiggy.

But the story of the delivery executives isn't as black and white. Some people argue that given the bad economy these people at least have a source of income. While others argue that they deserve fair working conditions. We’ll try to discuss two questions in this video. What challenges do the delivery executives face? And are there any positives of their jobs? And how can we evaluate it in a balanced manner? In recent years, a term called "gig economy" has been used frequently. What does it mean? A 'gig work' is basically work delivered ‘on-demand’, as and when the requirement arises, and for a fixed period of time. Examples of gig work include driving cabs, food delivery, and repairing electrical equipment. Estimates show that the number of platform-based gig workers has increased from 80 lakhs in 2016 to 1.5 crore in 2018. A BCG report added that most of these jobs are in lower-income job categories such as deliveries or ridesharing. According to this report, in the next 3-4 years, India’s gig economy will grow by 3x. While the gig economy is set to become more popular in India, gig workers don't see a secure future ahead. Why is that? There are 4 main reasons for this. First, according to numerous news reports, the majority of the gig workers overwork but don't get as much money.

Sumit Kumar, a delivery executive at Zomato, whom we mentioned in the introduction said that Zomato's payment to its delivery partners has two components: a fixed base pay on every completed order and incentives after attaining delivery milestones. Sumit said, “if you just work for the base pay, you won’t be able to afford an undergarment for yourself.” Hence, the incentives become really important for the workers. To make an additional Rs 200 incentive the executives have to reach 24 touchpoints i.e. complete 12 deliveries. This incentive can go as high as Rs 800 for them if they make 22 deliveries in one day. Sumit says “he has to put his blood, sweat, and tears" to deliver 22 orders in a day. This was the case for delivery services. But the incentives for cab services are structured in a similar way - they have to complete a certain number of trips to get their incentive. Recently earnings of many have dropped.

Arif, a Mumbai-based driver shared that he makes around Rs 3,000 to Rs 5,000 per week. “Earlier I could make Rs 12,000 a week", he said. And why have these earnings dropped? This is because of the “carrot and stick” concept, i.e. first you feed someone and then beat them with a stick. Aditi Surie, a researcher at the Indian Institute of Human Settlements, explains that the informal sector workers were lured with higher incentives. These high incentives led to a boom in taxi registrations and vehicle loans. For example, commercial taxi registrations in Bengaluru grew 40% every year between 2014 and 2017. But in 2017, incentives were cut and the drivers’ earnings reduced, making it difficult for them to pay the debt. That's why Tanveer Pasha, the president of a Drivers Association says that "we’re earning less than usual while working more.” With a longer number of working hours, the gig workers are witnessing a toll on their physical and mental health. .

Arif has been working for Ola for 3 years. He said, "driving from 7 am to 11 pm or midnight meant disturbed meal routines and that led to acidity and body ache. I didn't even have time to take a toilet break." According to research on Ola and Uber drivers, around 90% of the drivers claimed they get less than 6 hours of sleep. The research data shows that the respondents’ consumption of cigarettes, tobacco and alcohol increased too. The increasing amount of stress has also led workers to give up on their family time. Ahmed Shariff chose to quit the ride-hailing app he worked in for three months. He said, "the kind of work needed for incentives was not worth it. I’ve gone back to driving for offline companies; they may pay less, but the job is more dignified." Third, the gig workers lack social security in their work. The investigation held by Prachi Salve and Shreehari Paliath revealed that gig jobs offer none of the benefits that regular jobs bring – limit on working hours, overtime, and health benefits. An Ola cab driver said that after undergoing surgery, he was compelled to resume driving as he’s the breadwinner of the family. He had to take a break after each trip due to the pain. The COVID-19 pandemic has made things worse for these workers. During the lockdown, nobody was using these services.

Under a Facebook post by Ola, the comments section during COVID was filled with comments by drivers from across the country, stating their name and location, and a plea for help. Fourth, there’s constant pressure on the gig workers to maintain good customer ratings. Urban Company service professionals have to maintain a rating of 4.5. If it drops lower than 4.5, they are taken off the platform and sent for retraining. This has meant that often workers need to go beyond what their actual job demands. For example, Pooja, who provides beauty services on the Urban Company app, says that many customers "ask for a free head massage after the body massage. But if we refuse, they may give us low ratings" The focus on customer ratings gives power to the customer and strips it away from the workers. The economic logic behind this is to attract more paying customers, apps are designed to give them more power. The sad part is - workers are not aware of what ratings they receive. And the companies don’t have a grievance mechanism system where the workers can make an appeal or ask for additional information regarding the bad reviews. Many times they get kicked off a platform without receiving sufficient information. So these were the negative aspects of the gig economy. It also has a positive side.

For example, in 2016, Pooja opened a beauty salon using a loan. Pooja struggled to repay the load, so she started working as a spa therapist with the Urban Company. Now, she does not want to leave the platform. To run her salon, she had to pay rent, give salary to the staff and buy equipment, yet there was no guarantee of client footfall. She added, "with the app, I don't have many of these expenses and I can earn more." A report conducted an interview of around 90 women from Mumbai and Delhi and showed that the women working on Urban Company, on average, earn Rs 1,550 per day against the Rs 300 per day for a routine salon job. In addition to increased earnings, women also like flexible work timings as it allows them to manage their household responsibilities.

Almost 85% of the respondents in the study were satisfied with the flexible timings. This was an example of the positive side. Another positive side is that gig workers at least have a source of income. There are many who’re completely unemployed and have no job opportunities. But the gig workers have a source of income. And remember the hate that Grofers’ CEO received for its 10 minutes tweet? The CEO clarified that they are not going to meet the 10 minutes by pushing its drivers to deliver faster but rather because of "in-store planning and tech". This debate about the gig economy has divided people into two groups - one who thinks that these jobs are horrible and those that think that they aren't as bad. Truth as always lies in the middle. In the current challenging economic environment, these jobs offer employment opportunities to several people.

At the same time, a lot can be done to improve the working conditions of the workers. Prof. Ramaswamy, a researcher at Indira Gandhi Institute of Development, says that India needs to set up institutional mechanisms such as labor court systems to improve the working conditions of the gig workers. And thankfully, the government is making progress on this issue. Ministry of Law and Justice has come up with a Code on Social Security (2020) that mandates the Union and state governments to offer provisions and social security to the gig workers. These would provide life and disability cover, health and maternity benefits, old age protection, education, provident funds, and other benefits. But till these regulations are acted up properly, the gig workers will continue to toil.

As Tanveer Pasha, the head of the driving association said in an interview, “it’s a bit like a drug. We had been hooked, and our options are taken away from us. Now we rely entirely on what these app companies decide for us.” We should keep in mind that the government and the companies aren’t the only ones responsible for improving the welfare of gig workers. The customers are responsible too. And it’s not complicated. You can tip them, give a high rating if you’re satisfied with their work, and if you’re dissatisfied, and provide an explanation so that the worker gets to know the reason for the poor rating. This simple solution can have a positive and significant impact on the lives of gig workers.

The News Cover: On 28 August 2021 in Haryana's Karnal many farmers were protesting. The police violently lathi-charged the farmers. An IAS officer Ayush Sinha had also ordered the police to crack the farmers' heads open. The farmers were left stunned by this inappropriate order. Bharatiya Kisan Union leader Rakesh Tikait was furious over Ayush Sinha's orders. He met government officials demanding strict punishment to the police officers. If their demands are not met they would lay siege on the Karnal mini-secretariat. A delegation of 11 farm leaders was invited by the BJP state government for talks over.

Tikait present a list of demands that needed to be resolved. However there talks were inconclusive due to disagreements. On 8 September 2021, thousands of farmers from Haryana and neighboring states like Punjab reached a place called the New Anaj Mandi in Karnal by riding tractors and motorcycles. From there they marched on foot to the Karnal mini-secretariat. The police placed barricades and sprayed water. Farmers jumped the barricades and went forward. They successfully reached the mini-secretariat without any complications and surrounded the building. When tikait was asked by a leader how long farmers will stay there he said they have all prepared to stay there for a very long time till their demands are met as they have set up tents.

The News Cover: Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh wants to achieve the target of 100% vaccination against the deadly COVID-19. For this the Ujjain district Collector Ashish Singh came up with a unique idea and issued an order on 22nd June. The order said salaries of government employees in Ujjain will not be disbursed if they fail to get vaccinated till 31st July.

The decision was taken with the aim to attain 100% vaccination. The order also said that an officer has been directed to collect vaccination certificates. Once the certificates are checked only then the salaries will be released. Heads of various departments in the district were also directed to submit information about vaccination among the daily wage and contractual employees.

The collector said such a decision was made because, it was found that many Ujjain government employees had died due to COVID-19 as they were not vaccinated. The decision to release salary only after vaccination was to encourage employees to take the jab. This will ensure many people will get vaccinated and remain safe.

The News Cover: well the department of expenditure ministry of finance, yesterday released a number of rupees 8923.8 crores to 25 states. for providing grants to the rural local bodies RLBs these grants are meant for all three tiers of Panchayati, raj institutions, the village, block, in the district level institutions. the amount was released on Saturday as the first installment of the grants for the year 2021-22. it may be utilized by the RLBs among.

other things for various prevention and mitigation measures needed to combat the covid-19 pandemic, it is expected to augment resources to the three tiers of panchayats for fighting covid-19. the statewide amount of the grant released has in fact been released. so well what is important about this grant? is that it was supposed to be given as for the Philippines finance commission from June, but because of given the fact that there has been a pandemic in a national health emergency they released this money yesterday itself.

well ahead at least one month in advance, it's also with untied without any utilization given the prevailing situation. so as to allow panchayat, institutions, as you rightly pointed out the village, the block, in the district level, to take various prevention and mitigation steps to fight this pandemic. because as you're well aware this is now the covid virus has spread to try to tie three cities. and where the various facilities are not as good as in the cities, and in that backdrop that the ministry of expenditure has released these funds, untied funds, to ensure that people get some relief and some measures are taken to stop the spread of this virus.

Third Wave Inevitable: Grim Warning From Government's Scientific Adviser

The News Cover: well the government's scientific advisor in a press briefing just a little while back, has warned of the third wave, of covid. which he says is inevitable phase three is inevitable given, the high levels of the circulating viruses, what dr Raghavan, has said it's not clear on what time scales this phase three, with will occur this is terrible news given. the fact that India is just in the middle of phase two right now.
and we are all suffering immensely, we should prepare for new waves, the government has said this on the surge in Covid. they've also spoken about the so-called India double mutant, it's called the b1.617 variant, which essentially has certain features which enable antibody. escape in other words the antibodies in other words. it's easier for higher transmissibility people, get infected much faster.

and the vaccines themselves perhaps are not as efficacious. as they are in the original strain, and this is now believed to be something that is resulting in a large number of cases across the country. this has been confirmed by the health ministry today. two months after clinical information suggesting, the spread of this variant called b1.617 was reported by doctors in Maharashtra.

and elsewhere coronavirus, to go from here a phase 3 is inevitable given the high levels of circulating virus. but it's not clear on what time scale this phase 3 will occur hopefully incrementally. but we should prepare for new waves previous infections and vaccines. will cause adaptive pressure on the virus. for new kinds, of changes which try to escape it and therefore we should be prepared by scientifically to take care of that.

Mamata wins West Bengal but loses in Nandigram

The News Cover: On one hand where the cases of coronavirus infections are being counted in the country, On the other hand, on 2nd May the election results were counted from whose rallies the coronavirus actually spread. And the results are very shocking. If we talk especially of West Bengal, Everything predicted by the exit polls turned out to be wrong. Not one or two, all of the exit polls failed badly. They predicted that TMC would get at most 180 seats. But in reality, TMC got an almost two-thirds majority.
Not only did they cross the 200 marks, But their performance also was better than in the last Bengal election. Not only the media, the Home Minister of the country, Amit Shah, had also predicted the result very confidently after every phase of the elections. After the first phase, he had said the BJP will win 26 out of the 30 seats. After five phases he had said that BJP had already won 122 seats. And overall he had said that BJP will cross the 200 marks. But this did not happen. Often politicians put across such claims to build up the narrative. So that there is good momentum in the elections.

It's not a big deal. But there was one prediction where big stakes were involved. The predictions of the political strategist Prashant Kishore. He had said that BJP will not cross the 100 mark. The number of seats they win will not be in 3 digits. If they do win, he'll leave his profession. Not only did his predictions come true. But they came true at the time when the whole media ran with the exact opposite claim. After winning the election, he accused the Election Commission of a very serious crime. Generally, it is when parties lose the election that they blame the EVMs or Election Commission. But here, even after winning with a two-thirds majority, he said that the Election Commission tried its best to help BJP win.

And this happened for the very first time in the history of the country. That the Election Commission was so biased towards a party. "With a blatant - blatantly partial Election Commission, We went through hell. They allowed - they gave the free hand to BJP to do whatever they wanted to do." He gave several reasons for this. First, stretching the election for 8 phases. Just take the scheduling of the election, 8 rounds, in the pandemic time, what made you do this? Only because you wanted to give more opportunities to the BJP leaders to come and campaign. Second, designing the election phases in such a way that in the first couple of phases the areas where BJP is stronger goes to the election.
And in the areas and districts where TMC is strong, conducting elections in each of those districts in four phases there. So that no momentum can be build up. In the last, so many years, when a district was carved out in four phases? Just because the district was supposedly seen as a Trinamool stronghold. That district polled in four phases? Just because you wanted to have 4 seats, 5 seats, 10 seats so that no momentum can be built in favor of Trinamool. The bulk of the seats that BJP won in Lok Sabha went for poll early. Is it a coincidence? Third, using religion, all the religious politics used during the campaigning allowing it to continue.

And not taking any action against those politicians that are politicizing Hindus-Muslims. If we talk about religious politics, then some people are still trying to drive a wedge between Hindus and Muslims even after this election. It is especially seen frequently by the BJP supporters. They're saying that the TMC's win in the election is because of their minority vote bank. That all the Muslims come together to vote for TMC. And these same people curse Hindus for not voting for their party. They wonder if the people know that the Hindus in Bengal are in danger. That all the Hindus should come together to vote for their party.

This same strategy is used every time in every state. They believe that they can scare and fool Hindus to get their votes. But let me tell you the reality, friends. In Bengal, 70% of the population is Hindu. And if you see the vote share of TMC, it is almost touching 50%. By seeing this you might say that around 20% of the Hindus voted for TMC. But even simple maths doesn't show the reality. In many seats in the South West area of Bengal, the Muslim population is less than 5%. But see that all the seats there have been won by TMC by a large margin. This data clearly shows that labeling everything as Hindu or Muslim needs to be stopped. Even though BJP lost in West Bengal if you see the overall results of all the five states, Then it is not an embarrassing defeat for BJP.
They have become the main opposition party in West Bengal. They had won less than 10 seats in the last election. Apart from this, the BJP Alliances have clearly won Assam and Puducherry. And reality, friends, is that this is more of a loss for Congress than BJP. Congress lost the States of Assam and Puducherry. And in West Bengal, they lost their role as the opposition. And in Kerala, LDF's victory was historic. For the last 40 years in Kerala,

LDF and UDF have been winning alternatively. But this time it didn't happen and LDF won its second continuous term. This is also a big loss for Congress. If Congress really wants to win, then they need strong local leaders. It has been seen time and again in the last several elections. Wherever there has been a strong opposition leader, it was easy to defeat BJP. Be it Amarinder Singh of Punjab. Arvind Kejriwal in Delhi.

The News Cover: Monica gold, sits by her husband's hospital bed just hours after she lost her mother to covid-19. she's managed to find him oxygen but not the ventilator, doctors say, he needs my mom it's 5:30 in the morning today because of lack of ventilator. there was no ventilator, otherwise, she couldn't survive. now again he is he needs a ventilator, support doctor,' says two days'. I have tried, I don't know thousands of numbers across India.

nobody is healthy, India's underfunded health care system. is collapsing, as it's overwhelmed by the world's biggest surge in cases, there are long lines outside oxygen suppliers around the country. this tension here is people waiting. the hope of getting oxygen, for their sick relatives some have been waiting for more than 12 hours. but with hospitals out of beds, and oxygen these suppliers, are many people's only bed began arriving from other countries.

this week with the first cargo from the u.s, touching down, in New Delhi on Friday. the military plane was carrying more than 400 oxygen cylinders, hospital equipment, and nearly a million rapid tests, Us will also send hundreds of thousands of vaccines, and the raw materials needed to manufacture more. that's as many states say, they don't have enough doses, to start inoculating all adults, from Saturday. as planned we were preparing for the vaccination campaign. and we started mega campaigns, also we trained thousands of our healthcare workers, and doctors, etc.

to start this mega vaccination campaign, but there is no vaccine with us health experts, say the government failed. to prepare, for the second wave of India. was lucky enough to have a 2nd wave, which was delayed compared to many other countries. out there, and we had a relatively long time to see, what has happened to the rest of the world?

in terms of how severe the second wave was, and unfortunately as a public health researcher, I sort of failed to see the kind of preparation that, I was expecting, that the government would be doing in the last year Monica says her mother wasn't a victim of covid-19. but a lack of preparedness by the government, and that she doesn't know what she'll tell her eight-year-old son if she goes home without his father.
