The News Cover: More than 6 lakh children die of pneumonia every year. Pneumonia is the leading cause of death in 15 percent of children under 5 years of age. This was the World Health Organization's 2017 report. In these 3 years though the situation has not changed much. Around 2.5 million people worldwide, including children and the elderly, died of the disease in 2019.

Pneumonia Day was celebrated two days ago. The Global Coalition Against Child Pneumonia declared November 12, 2009 as World Pneumonia Day, primarily to protect children from pneumonia. At that time, there were about 1.2 million annual deaths of pneumonia under the age of 5 in the world. In the last 11 years, the death toll has been greatly reduced due to increased awareness. "Pneumonia is a severe form of pneumonia in 3 million children in our country. Five out of every 1,000 children die of pneumonia. Pneumonia Day is observed to reduce child mortality from this lung disease," Kaninika said.

The goal of the World Health Organization and UNICEF is to reduce the infant mortality rate to three per thousand due to pneumonia by 2025. "Pneumonia is responsible for 18 percent of all deaths among children under the age of five in the world," said Kaninika.

Indian pulmonologist Ashok Sengupta said that if one is careful about the prevention of this deadly disease, it can be largely prevented. To prevent this lung disease in children, Kaninika advised to breastfeed only after birth. This means that the baby should not be given any food other than breast milk for the first 6 months. Babies who grow up on breast milk have a much lower risk of any infection, including pneumonia, they said. The child should be given vitamin A on the advice of the doctor. Because vitamin A helps to keep the epithelial cells of the lungs normal. In addition, ticks have a significant role in preventing pneumonia in children. Measles increases the risk of pneumonia. In addition, diphtheria and hip B vaccines and pneumococcal vaccines can prevent the disease in children.

"Pneumonia has three main problems. Fever, cough and shortness of breath. It can be accompanied by chest pain. It's called pleuritic pain. Breathing hard causes chest pain. Pneumonia starts with a dry cough. There may be blood in the cold. Often red blood comes out in the dark. " Other symptoms of pneumonia include headache, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, extreme weakness, chills and fever.

"Different types of pneumonia include community-acquired pneumonia, hospital-acquired pneumonia, ventilator-associated pneumonia, and aspiration pneumonia. In general, hygiene should be followed by hygiene after washing hands and masks. Covid patients may have serious problems with pneumonia, coughs, fevers and shortness of breath. Adults or children are treated according to the same protocol. "
