News Cover: Vitamin D is essential for optimal health. When ultraviolet B (UV-B) rays of the sun touch the cholesterol in the skin cells, it helps to produce Vitamin D. Since most of us are at home due to the pandemic, lack of sunlight is causing its deficiency.

But there are a few food items that can help Vitamin D requirements. Many people love cheese but avoid it thinking it is fattening. Cheese has high levels of Vitamin D. Eating naturally grown mushroom exposed to UV light are excellent sources of Vitamin D. Mushrooms available in the market are grown in the dark and have less Vitamin D.

While buying from markets check for the brands that sell UV light treated mushrooms. For vegetarians, it is difficult to find sources of Vitamin D. But now many dairy products like milk, yogurt, cheese, butter, etc are fortified with Vitamin D. Milk already contains protein, calcium, fat and good carbohydrates.

Many brands now add Vitamin D to dairy products to make it healthier. Many people are allergic to milk and other dairy products. They need not worry about their Vitamin D requirements as there are other products available. Soya products like tofu and many fruits juices, especially orange juice are now fortified with Vitamin D. Certain cereals and instant oats also contain Vitamin D.
